On Demand Available -- Composite Materials Modelling in COMSOL Multiphysics Webinar

Published : May 15, 2026

COMSOL held a webinar on Modelling Composite Materials, where Robbie Balcombe, Technical Director at COMSOL Ltd, demonstrated how to model layered composite structures in COMSOL Multiphysics. The webinar is now available on demand here: http://uk.comsol.com/c/8a5x Common examples of composite materials include fiber-reinforced plastic, laminated plates, and sandwich panels, all of which are widely used in the manufacturing of aircraft and spacecraft components, wind turbine blades, and other structures. In this webinar, two approaches were discussed to accurately model composite shells: layerwise theory and equivalent single layer theory. In addition to standard structural analyses (such as stationary, eigenfrequency, transient, and frequency domain), the presentation went over micromechanical, first-ply failure, and linear buckling analyses. The presenter showed how to include various physical phenomena, such as heat transfer and fluid flow, in a composite laminate model. COMSOL released the new Composite Materials Module in October 2018 with its COMSOL Multiphysics Version 5.4.
