On June 28, 2018, TPI Composites was awarded the 2018 JEC Product Innovation Award presented at the JEC Composites in Transportation Symposium in Chicago for the design and fabrication of an Integrated Monocoque Composite Electric Transit Bus. TPI collaborated with electric transit bus manufacturer, Proterra, in the design and development of a structural composite bus body. The composites structure of the Proterra “Catalyst” utilizes a combination of reinforcement materials including fiberglass and carbon fiber that enable a lightweight body structure that weighs thousands of pounds less than conventional metallic structures. The lower mass composite body structure is a key contributor that enables Proterra to provide industry-leading range for its battery-electric vehicles. Composite structures provide additional performance advantages with enhanced durability and reduced maintenance costs, by providing a corrosion-free solution. The Proterra bus is a purpose-built electric vehicle which offers significant performance and economic benefits due to being designed from its inception to be an all-electric transit bus. The composite bus is manufactured in TPI’s Warren, Rhode Island facility as well at the company’s new Newton, Iowa transportation manufacturing facility.
