Washington State to Be Promoted As “Silicon Valley” of the Worldwide Composites Industry

march 26 2012

Eight of Washington State’s composite supply chain providers along with the Port of Port Angeles will attend the JEC Composites Show in Paris, March 27–March 29. The delegation, supported in part by the Washington State Department of Commerce and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), will promote Washington State as “Silicon Valley” of the worldwide composites industry

With a core of innovative research and development, highly-skilled workers, low-cost clean power and an attractive business environment, today the state ranks as a global leader in the advanced composite materials industry. In 2011 SGL Automotive Group’s carbon fiber production plant, a joint venture with BMW, launched operations in Moses Lake, adding to the list of world-class composites companies that have chosen Washington for operations.

Companies that will join the delegation include Angeles Composites Technology, ElectroImpact, General Plastics, Globe Machine Manufacturing Company, Innovative Composite Engineering, Profile Composites, Warm Industrial Nonwovens and Pro CNC. Seven of the companies received financial assistance to attend the show from a State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Funds from the grant, administered in Washington by Commerce, provide qualifying companies with export vouchers up to $5,000 with a 25% company match to help pay for trade show expenses such airfare, admission, translation services and other export-related services.

“Washington companies --- whether it’s Starbucks, Microsoft, or Boeing --- have transformed their respective industries,” said Gov. Chris Gregoire. “Our composites sector holds the same promise for changing the way the world lives.”
