Sabic to Build Carbon Fiber Plant in Saudi Arabia

april 9 2012

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) plans to build carbon fiber manufacturing plant, in Saudi Arabia. The company intends to manufacture precursor and carbon fiber in Saudi Arabia, with commercial availability of the fiber expected in 2015. The company plans to produce at least 3,000 metric tons annually. Sabic began the process in June 2011 when it signed a technology licensing agreement with acrylic manufacturer Montefibre SpA (Milan, Italy).

According to information Montefibre’s technology will be the basis for a new acrylic manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia to be built by SABIC. The acrylic will feed a new polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor facility, also to be built by Sabic in Saudi Arabia. The PAN, in turn, will feed a new Sabic carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Saudi Arabia.
