Approximately 150 senior academics, industrialists and government functionaries exchanged views to evolve a strategy for turning around the composites industry of Pakistan in the first ever composites show, symposium, policy dialogue and industrial exhibition held in Pakistan recently. The industrial exhibition, which featured over 20 companies, attracted over 500 visitors. Composites Engineering Research Group of Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME), NUST College of EME organized the event sponsored through a research grant from Department of International Development (DFID), UK under the British Council DELPHE project. The Federal Minister for Science and Technology Mir Changez Khan Jamali during his address mentioned the government’s role should be of an enabler and facilitator for the industry. He said today’s economic paradigm, where defense deployments were being outsourced to private defence contractors by the developed countries like USA, we should open up our public institutes for Public-Private partnership in the best interest of our nation. Therefore, from the government side I give full assurance that we will very carefully consider all the recommendations that come out of this policy dialogue and will make every endeavor to implement the recommendations in their true letter and spirit, he said. The Composites Engineering Research Group leader Dr Rizwan Saeed presented a proposal for a joint technology centre to be established with the combined efforts of private and government sectors. The British Council Director Education for South Asia, Dr Nils Tomes congratulated the participants and expressed the hope this conference and exhibition would result in lasting and effective partnerships between the academia and industry, because the future of this country depends on developing a knowledge based economy and this is simply not possible without having such partnerships. Commandant of EME college Maj General Obaid bin Zakaria highlighted the objectives of this exhibition and said one of the core objectives of this gathering was to bring due recognition for the ‘Composites Community’ as an industrial sector which holds a lot of promise for the future of this nation and the development of National Advance Composite Research and Product Development Centre.
