Epoch Composites Property in Chilhowie Bought by Smyth to Draw Major Industry

The Smyth County Board of Supervisors apprised about the purchase of the 70-acre former Epoch Composites property in Chilhowie. The county’s Industrial Development Authority bought the site for $3.225 million using grant funds.

In January, the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission awarded the county $4.9 million under its Mega-Site Industrial Site Program. The Mega-Site program was established to help develop large industrial real estate to attract private industry. In the initial round of program funding in January 2011, the county was awarded $130,500 for a site selection study and planning project. The Epoch Composites site is the location of the former American Furniture plant.
