Dell Demonstrates Its Thinnest, Sleekest Carbon Fiber Bodied Ultrabook Ever: XPS 13

january 16 2012

Dell Inc. showed off its thinnest and sleekest mobile computer ever at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, joining the personal computer industry's push toward creating a new premium category of products called ultrabooks.

The Dell XPS 13 weighs just less than 3 pounds, is less than a quarter-inch thick at its thinnest part and has a starting price of $999. Dell is positioning the product as part of its XPS line of high-end notebooks. The new machines will be available in the United States through Dell's website and in select retail stores at the end of February.

Dell is perhaps the first PC maker to use "edge-to-edge" glass on its machine, enabling users to get a 13.3-inch screen in a "footprint" usually associated with smaller computers. The computer case is made from machined aluminum with a carbon fiber composite base.

"The XPS 13 is the culmination of an extensive design and development process focused on creating the best ultrabook on the planet," said Jeff Clarke, vice chairman for global operations and end-user computing at Dell. "The XPS 13 exemplifies our commitment to offering industry-leading mobile solutions that deliver durability and performance without compromise."
