Brazilian Reverse Logistics Program for Composites Exceeds Initial Goal

March 05 2018

The Brazilian reverse logistics program for composite parts exceeded the initial collection goal. Created by the Latin American Composite Materials Association (ALMACO) and operating in the city of Curitiba, capital of Parana, it was responsible for the allocation of 2,100 kg of waste, or 110% of the one designed for the first phase – 1,900 kg, considering the period between September 2016 to December 2017, as established with the Secretariat of Environment and Water Resources of the State of Parana (SEMA). From now on, the recycling goal will be annual, with a minimum collection of 1,500 kg of composites expected in 2018.

At first, the program includes the reverse logistics of bus components, such as roofs, railings, and bumpers. The practical aspects of the project will be under the responsibility of Geoquimica, which is the company responsible for collecting the post-consumer composite parts at bus workshops and ensure their correct disposal.

The plan drawn up by ALMACO has the support of Masimon consulting and nine companies of composites production chain: Ashland, CPIC, Jushi, Marcopolo, Mascarello, Morquimica, Neobus, Owens Corning, and Tecnofibras. Also the National Association of Bus Manufacturers (FABUS) and the Industry Interstate Association of Rail and Highway Material and Equipment (SIMEFRE) support the project.
