Brazilian Composites Industry is Optimistic about 2021

March 01 (2021

Although it is impossible to set a growth rate, 2021 will be a positive year for the Brazilian composites industry. The increase in demand must come mainly from the civil construction, transportation, wind power generation and, further back, infrastructure markets, this one much more dependent on the release of scarce government funds.

It is in this way that Erika Bernardino Apra, president of the Latin American Composite Materials Association (ALMACO), projects the performance of the composites production chain.

“Like most industries, in 2020 we live a real roller coaster”, she recalls. After an excellent first two months, the pandemic hit the companies represented by ALMACO in full – more than 70% resorted to reduced working hours and around 40% to layoffs. Then, from July, the scenario changed. “It was such a strong recovery that it surprised even the most optimistic.”

One of the greatest evidences of this sharp rise in sales of composites can be illustrated by the swimming pools. Stuck at home, people started to invest in domestic leisure options, and the swimming pools became an absolute sales success. “Never before has so much resin, fiber and gelcoat been sold for the manufacture of swimming pools as in the second half of 2020”, says the president of ALMACO.

However, the growth of the composites market last year, if any, was minimal, as the very good months ended up making up for the very bad ones, notes Erika. “But the photography of the second semester left a very encouraging perspective for 2021”.

For the current period, the biggest challenges on ALMACO's radar are, in addition to the obvious uncertainties regarding the pandemic and vaccination, the scarcity of raw materials and inputs, such as packaging. “Situations like this can push prices up and hinder the advance of our industry”, she concludes.
