Bac2 to Show How Innovative Catalyst Enables Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Low-Smoke Phenolic Resole Based SMC and BMC

january 9 2012

Bac2, a polymer innovation company, is to present details of a family of latent acid catalysts at The Society of Plastics Engineers’ Thermoset TOPCON 2012 conference, San Antonio, Texas, USA, on Tuesday 24th January 2012.
A paper entitled “Low Fire, Smoke and Toxicity SMC and BMC Using Novel Latent Catalyst Activated Phenolic Resins”, delivered the company’s CTO, Dr. Graham Murray, will explain how Bac2’s CSR family of latent acid catalysts can be used to create stable phenolic moulding compounds for the production of inherently fire-safe BMC, SMC and other composite forms. Products requiring these characteristics include interior fittings for all forms of transportation, seating for stadia, electrical insulation products, and electronic/electrical systems packaging.

Moulding compounds containing resin, the CSR catalyst and filler can be mixed, packaged, shipped and stored ready for use for up to 6 months. They maintain good mould-flow characteristics and can be cured rapidly at 120 degrees C or more slowly at temperatures above 50 degrees C.

Creating fire-safe moldings has become more difficult recently because the chlorinated or brominated fillers used to achieve flame-retardancy in polyester based-resins have now been banned in many countries. Alternative fillers adversely affect the flow characteristics of moulding compounds, making it difficult to maintain consistent quality of the finished moldings.

Bac2 has demonstrated that when using CSR catalysts, the processing properties and the composite properties of molded products are not significantly different if curing is carried out immediately after preparing the pre-polymeric mix or several months later. The company offers a choice of standard CSR latent acid catalysts, and works with customers to develop specific catalyst-resin packages for the particular processes.
