American Composites Manufacturers Association Continues Advocacy for Composites in Infrastructure Applications

Jan 02 2017

From February 7-9, 2017, the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) and its members will continue to advocate for the increased use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in infrastructure applications. During ACMA's second annual Infrastructure Day, to be held on February 7, 2017, ACMA staff and member-company representatives will meet with various offices around Capitol Hill to introduce key policy staffers to composites and explain the benefits of using composite materials in infrastructure applications.

"Last year's Infrastructure Day led directly to language promoting innovative materials in the recently passed Water Resources Development Act. Previous meetings of ACMA members with Members of Congress led to an amendment in the last highway bill to report on the performance of composite bridges. This year's program will lead to more legislative success and markets being opened to composites." said Tom Dobbins, ACMA President.

ACMA will also co-host a workshop with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at NIST headquarters in Gaithersburg, Md., February 8-9. Participants in the workshop will develop strategies to overcome the obstacles to the use of composite materials in infrastructure applications.

At the workshop, ACMA staff, along with representatives from manufacturers, material suppliers, academia and government agencies will work together to outline technical needs, identify potential standards that will facilitate the use of composites, and determine strategies to educate end-users about fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials.

"We are excited to be collaborating with NIST on a workshop that will contribute to our industry's ongoing dialogue with important stakeholders about how to incorporate more composite products in bridges, utility poles, crossarms, water treatments and more," said Tom Dobbins, ACMA President. "The agency is a thought leader in the development of the next iteration of our nation's infrastructure."
